What is ESG?

From CSR to ESG: Understanding modern corporate responsibility in simple terms

In today's ever-evolving world, businesses are facing some monumental challenges, with climate change leading the charge. To understand how businesses are stepping up, we need to dive into the evolution of corporate responsibility, from the early days of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) to today's ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) metrics.

What is CSR all about?

Think of CSR as a company's promise to be a good citizen. Born in the mid-20th century, CSR was all about businesses realizing they had responsibilities beyond just making money. It's like when a company decided to support a local charity, protect the environment, or ensure their employees were treated fairly. CSR was a company's way of saying, "Hey, we care about the bigger picture and want to make a positive impact."

Enter ESG: A new way to measure good deeds

Fast forward to the 21st century, and the world's become a bit more complex. People began to ask, "That's great you're doing good, but can you show us how much good you're doing?" And so, ESG was born. Think of it as a report card for businesses on how they're doing in three areas:
  • Environment: How green is the company? This looks at things like carbon footprint and conservation efforts.
  • Social: How does the company treat people? This includes fair pay, human rights, and community involvement.
  • Governance: Is the company run in a fair and transparent way? This dives into leadership, shareholder rights, and overall transparency.
A key report called "Who Cares Wins" in 2005 highlighted just how important these ESG activities were. Top-performing companies weren't just those with the best profits, but those that also cared for the planet, treated people well, and operated transparently.

So, why all the buzz around ESG?

Over the years, more companies started to use ESG as their guide, showcasing their efforts in sustainability reports. This wasn't just a passing trend; it was a massive shift from the broader ideas of CSR to the specific, measurable actions of ESG.

But is it all perfect?

Not quite. The world of ESG isn't without its challenges. With so much flexibility in how companies report their ESG efforts, a big question pops up: Are businesses truly being as sustainable as they claim? And do the markets value these efforts as much as they say they do? It is a complex topic worth exploring as we all aim for a greener, fairer, and more transparent world. In a nutshell, as the world changes, so does the way businesses show they care. From the heartfelt gestures of CSR to the measured steps of ESG, it is clear that corporate responsibility is here to stay. And that's a win for all of us!
